Killer Whale, The Mighty Dolph (Click to select text)
Killer Whale, a name to strike terror in the hearts of sea ferers in all the oceans of the world. The Romans called it Orca, meaning "The demon from Hell." Originally, american fisherman referred to them as "Whale Killer" because many fisherman reported seeing pods of them attacking and killing Humpback, Gray, and even Blue Whales. Somehow the name was flipped around and it became "Killer Whale." The almost completely black whale has a strinking white underside that sometimes yellows with age. They also have white patches above/behind the eye, and behind the tall dorsal fin. This patch is known as the "saddle patch" for obvious reasons. Males weigh up to eight-thousand pounds while females weigh closer to four-thousand. The Killer Whale is also very easily identifiable as male or female. The male's dorsal fin can reach seven feet tall and stands straight up off the middle of his back. The female's dorsal fin is much shorter, usually about three feet, and instead of standing straight, forms a crecent arc on her back towards the tail. Although Killer Whales are not used for oil-based products they have over and over again been found with harpoons sticking out of their backs. Research soon found that fishermen were shooting them to keep them from eating all of a days catch. This was not the first time something like this was found. In the 1950's The U.S. Navy used machine guns to slaughter hundreds of Killer Whales off of Iceland to protect fishing. After these animals are killed, they are usually thrown away. The meat is very bitter and is not used. Killer Whales also do not produce oil as most other whales do so there is no benefit from that area of trade either. Killer Whales aren't actually whales, they're dolphins, the largest of their group. Both Dolphins and Killer Whales are extremely intelligent and learn quickly. They are also both very social and loving. They appreciate verbal praise and touch as rewards. These characteristics are what makes them ideal for training at water parks. These animals have been in captivity since the mid-sixties and people all over the world enjoy the shows they put on. Unfortunately the myth of the "Killer" still exists and people remain afraid of them. Luckily we have programs and waterparks all over to familiarize people with these beautiful animals.
